When it comes to protection, many people imagine it as a constant defensive stance, as if expecting danger around every corner. However, protection is much more nuanced than guarding against external threats. For many, it’s less about shielding against others and more about maintaining authority over personal energy, setting boundaries, and preserving well-being.

In this guide, I explore what protection means and share practical tips for incorporating protection rituals into your daily life.

What Is Protection Really About?

Protection isn’t just about physical safety or avoiding harmful energies. It’s about:

  • Preserving Energy: Keeping your energy contained and reclaiming what you’ve given away.
  • Setting Boundaries: Establishing energetic barriers to maintain personal power.
  • Grounding: Staying rooted in your own energy to minimize the impact of external influences.

It’s not always about fear of curses or hexes—it’s about recognizing your role as the authority over your own energy. This authority ensures that nothing can infiltrate your space without your consent.

Practical Protection Practices and Rituals

Here are some effective ways to incorporate protection into your life:

1. Create a Protection Sigil

Sigils are easy, versatile tools for protection. Design your own sigil with intention and place it in strategic locations such as:

  • Draw with clear nail polish on windows, mirrors, or objects.
  • Add to personal items like phone cases or notebooks.
  • Apply to your skin with essential oils for layered intention.

I recorded a video on YouTube where I walk you through making your own Sigil, you can watch that here:

2. Carrying Protective Crystals as Shields

I keep specific crystals close to me throughout the day. Here are some crystals that are great for protection:

Black Tourmaline: A grounding stone perfect for home protection.

Jet: Lightweight and ideal for those dealing with others’ emotions, like teachers, healthcare workers, or therapists. It acts like a shield, deflecting negative energy.

Rose Quartz: Pair with Jet to replenish compassion reserves and avoid burnout.

I cleanse these stones regularly using smoke, reiki, or sound, ensuring their energy stays strong. Wearing them as jewelry or carrying one in my pocket creates a tangible reminder of my energetic boundary. Grab all the crystals you need for all life’s everyday challenges from Luxe Crystals. 3. Essential Oils and Spell Oils

Essential oils hold incredible energy, and I’ve found certain blends to be particularly protective. I use oils like frankincense, lavender, or cedarwood, applying them to my pulse points or creating a mist to spray around me. When I do this, I visualize the oils forming a shield, locking in positive energy while deflecting negativity. The soothing scents also enhance my focus and bring a sense of calm.

4. Practicing Reiki

One of the ways that I use Reiki for protection with my clients is I’ll end a session by having them visualize a light in the space of their heart and inviting Reiki to expand that light so it fills their whole body. Clearing any dark, clearing anything stagnant, clearing anything that’s not theirs, and then expanding beyond their body and filling the space around them.

If you just do Reiki for yourself every morning, that is a protective practice in and of itself because you are raising your frequency; you are speeding up the vibration of your energy, which naturally starts to repel lower frequencies around you.

5. Protection Simmer Pots

Recently, I’ve been hyper-focused on simmer pots. These great concoctions fill your home with beautiful scents while weaving protective energy into your space. Even if you don’t have time to stand over the stove, you can use a simmer pot to layer protective magic into your routine. For protection, start with these simple ingredients:

  • Salt (a universal protective agent)
  • Clove
  • Lemon
  • Rosemary

Remember: protection magic can be as simple as a pinch of salt in your soup or a sprinkle in your shoes before heading out. You can view some of my simmer pot recipes over on my YouTube Channel.

6. Color Magic for Everyday Protection

Did you know color magic is one of the easiest ways to incorporate protection into your daily life? Black, in particular, is a classic protective color. And it’s so versatile! You can wear black in small, subtle ways:

  • Black nail polish (bonus: carve a sigil into the polish before it dries!)
  • Accessories like earrings, scrunchies, or rings
  • Black socks or underwear—your magic, your secret!

With color magic, the options are endless, and it’s a great way to blend magic into your wardrobe and everyday items.

7. Candle Magic

Candles are the MVPs of low-effort magic. Whether it’s a simple tea light or a beautifully dressed taper, candle magic lets you focus your intention in a tangible, meditative way.

Here’s how to get started with protection candles:

  1. Carve Intentions: Use a toothpick or pin to inscribe protective symbols or words into the wax.
  2. Dress the Candle: Add oils, herbs, or salt for an extra layer of energy. (Pro tip: use a rollerball to apply oil without the mess!)
  3. Light and Let Go: Set your intention and let the candle do the work.

Candles can also act as offerings. On your altar, light a candle to open communication and request protection or guidance. You can also dedicate a “ghost light” (a candle or lamp left on) to protect your space, inspired by the tradition of ghost lights in theaters.

8. Create a Spell Jar

Spell jars are perfect for protection magic. These tiny, personalized creations are jars filled with herbs, oils, crystals, or even a simple slip of paper with your intention. Once filled, seal the jar with wax from a candle (even better if you use color magic here!).

To make a quick and easy protection spell jar:

  • Add salt (for protection), rosemary, and a small piece of lemon peel.
  • Write your intention on a slip of paper and tuck it inside.
  • Seal it with wax from a dressed candle.

Keep your spell jar on your desk or altar, or carry it with you. They’re fun to create, easy to customize, and provide a tactile connection to your magic.

Your Energy Is Your Power

Protection isn’t about living in fear but taking charge of your energy. You can create a protective routine that suits your lifestyle through sigils, crystals, oils, and intentional practices. Small, consistent actions build a solid foundation for energetic sovereignty, empowering you to thrive in any environment.

So, start small. Whether it’s a sigil on your favorite object or a simple visualization during your morning coffee, your protection practice is a powerful statement: I am the authority over my energy.
