What is the Autumn Equinox?
The autumn equinox, also known as Mabon, marks a pivotal point in the wheel of the year. It is a time when day and night are equal, symbolizing balance and the transition from the vibrant energy of summer to the introspective energy of fall. This period invites us to reflect on the abundance of the past months and prepare for winter’s inward journey.
8 Ways To Celebrate the Autumn Equinox
1. Reflect and Express Gratitude
The autumn equinox is a perfect time to reflect on the past months and express gratitude for the abundance you’ve experienced. Here are some different ways for you to do this:
- Journaling: Write about your achievements, experiences, and what you’re grateful for. Reflect on what you’ve harvested in your life, literally and metaphorically.
- Gratitude Rituals: Create a gratitude jar where you write down things you’re thankful for and read them aloud during a ritual or gathering.
2. Create Seasonal Altars and Decorations
Embrace the fall aesthetic by decorating your home and altar with seasonal items. Here are some ideas of what you can do:
– Altars: Decorate with gourds, cinnamon brooms, autumn leaves, and other fall-themed items. This creates a warm, inviting atmosphere and helps you connect with the season’s energy.
– Home Decor: Refresh your personal space with fall colors and symbols. This can include anything from table centerpieces to door wreaths.
3. Incorporate Crystals, Herbs, and Foods
Enhance your rituals and gatherings with specific crystals, herbs, and foods that resonate with the autumn equinox. These are some ideas of what I like to use:
– Crystals: Use tiger eye, amber, citrine, and pyrite to symbolize abundance and grounding.
– Herbs: Incorporate yarrow, mugwort, and rosemary into your rituals for their protective and cleansing properties.
– Foods: Celebrate with hearty vegetables like corn, pumpkins, and root vegetables, as well as seasonal fruits like apples and pomegranates. Enjoying seasonal treats like pumpkin spice lattes can also be a way to honor the season.
4. Host or Attend a Fall Equinox Ceremony
Participate in or host a ceremony to connect with others and honor the equinox.
– Virtual Ceremonies: Join online events which include journaling, meditations, and Reiki. You can find more information about mine here.
– In-Person Gatherings: Host a small gathering with friends and family to share a meal, express gratitude, and perform rituals together.
5. Practice Breathwork and Meditation
This is an excellent time of year to balance your energy and find inner peace through breathwork and meditation. You can practice balanced breathing by inhaling and exhaling for equal durations. This can help you find equilibrium and calm your mind. Or you could engage in guided meditations that focus on balance, gratitude, and reflection themes. 6. Create a Seasonal Spell Candles
I always love buying a seasonal candle to help infuse my space with my intentions for this upcoming season. You can either make your own and create a ritual out of the process or look at purchasing one from your favorite store. You can purchase the one I like to buy here.
7. Declutter and Let Go
Use this time to release what no longer serves you, both physically and emotionally. Here are some ideas of what you can do:
– Decluttering: Clean out a junk drawer or organize your space. This practice of non-attachment can help you feel more prepared to let go of bigger things in your life.
– Emotional Release: Reflect on habits, patterns, or relationships that you’re ready to release. Journaling can be a helpful tool for this process.
8. Connecting with Loved Ones
The autumn equinox is a time to gather with loved ones and express appreciation for their presence in your life. Not sure of some simple low effort ways to celebrate the equinox? Here are some quick ideas:
– Call or visit loved ones to say “I love you” and share your gratitude. This simple gesture can be incredibly meaningful during this reflective time.
– Host a meal with friends and family to celebrate the harvest and the abundance of the season. It can be grand, like a Thanksgiving dinner, or just a simple, hearty meal with your household.
Summary
The autumn equinox is a beautiful time to embrace balance, gratitude, and reflection. By incorporating these practices into your life, you can create intentional moments of magic and connect deeply with the energy of the season. Whether through rituals, breathwork, or simply spending time in nature, there are countless ways to honor this transition and prepare for the introspective journey of winter.
