What Is a Spell Jar?

Spell jars are an accessible and portable form of magic that has gained popularity within the spiritual community. And you all seem to love them when I share about them over on my Instagram!

Spell jars are essentially spells contained within a jar, filled with various ingredients that align with the spell’s intention. This can include a variety of elements such as oils, herbs, water, crystals, and pieces of paper with written intentions. Essentially, anything that holds symbolic significance or energy for the spell can be included. The beauty of a spell jar lies in its versatility and the personal touch you can add by selecting ingredients that resonate with you.

The Purpose of Spell Jars

Spell jars serve as a means to focus and amplify your intentions. They are particularly useful for those who need to keep their magical practice contained, such as people with pets or children. The jar contains the magical energy, making it a portable and safe way to perform spellwork. You can carry a spell jar in your purse, backpack, or car, or place it on your desk at work or in a specific area of your home where you need a boost of magical energy.

When to Make a Spell Jar

The timing for creating a spell jar depends on your personal needs and intentions. Here are some common scenarios:

  1. Facing Obstacles: When encountering resistance or challenges in life, creating a spell jar can help focus your energy on overcoming these obstacles. For example, if you’re feeling unsure about a new project, a spell jar can provide clarity and confidence.
  2. Manifesting Specific Goals: When you have a specific goal or intention, such as attracting abundance, love, or protection, a spell jar can be a powerful tool to call in these desires.
  3. On the Go: If you need a portable form of magic, a spell jar can be made to carry with you for continuous support and protection throughout the day.

How to Make a Spell Jar

Creating a spell jar involves several steps, from gathering materials to sealing the jar with intention. Here’s a detailed guide to help you get started:

Step 1: Gather Your Ingredients

Before you start assembling your spell jar, decide on the intention or goal of your spell. This will guide your choice of ingredients. But before you go out and buy a whole bunch of new ingredients, take inventory of what you have and make it like an adventure to look up the different magical properties, metaphysical properties for the spices that you already have. You can make yourself a little encyclopedia of magical properties. Here’s a list of common items you might consider:

  • Herbs and Spices: Look in your spice drawer for items with magical properties that align with your intention. A book that I really recommend if you feel really overwhelmed with the idea of googling everything in your spice rack to try to figure out and remember what it all means and what things correspond to is Cunningham’s Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs.
  • Oils: Choose oils that correspond to your intention, such as eucalyptus for healing or peppermint for clarity.
  • Crystals: Small crystal chips or larger stones can enhance your spell. Amethyst for spiritual growth, rose quartz for love, or black tourmaline for protection are popular choices.
  • Paper and Ink: Write your intention on a piece of paper. You can use specific colors of paper and ink to further correspond with your intention.
  • Miscellaneous Items: Beads, buttons, feathers, or other small items that hold significance to you can be included.

Step 2: Cleanse Your Ingredients

So after you’ve collected all of your materials, I like to give everything a good cleanse, especially if you’re getting jars from Amazon or if it’s a jar that you used to hold your pasta sauce, give it a good cleanse, physically wash it out, get the marinara out of there. But also I love to smoke cleanse a jar with a little incense stick. I’ve been using frankincense because energy wise Frankincense is very much an amplifier. Plus I like to use a bell, for some sound cleansing, so I will just lay everything out and I will ring the bell over it.

Step 3: Assemble the Jar

There are no strict rules for assembling your spell jar, but here are a few tips:

  • Layering: You can layer your ingredients in the jar, starting with a base of herbs or spices and adding other elements on top.
  • Mixing: Alternatively, you can mix your ingredients together before placing them in the jar.
  • Visual Appeal: Consider how you want your jar to look. The visual aspect can be a part of the magic, adding to the intention and energy.
  • Sigil: I will draw sigils on the outside of the jars and make that a way for me to know what the intention is long term, but also to infuse it with that intention.

Step 4: Seal the Jar

Sealing your spell jar is an important step as it contains the energy and intention within. Here are a few methods:

  • Wax Sealing: Use a candle to drip wax onto the lid or cork of the jar. Choose a candle color that corresponds with your intention.
  • Lid or Cork: If you’re using a jar with a screw-on lid or cork, ensure it is tightly sealed. You can still add a layer of wax for extra security and intention.

Using Your Spell Jar

Now that your spell jar is complete, it’s really up to you have to use it. Here are a few ideas:

  • Altar: Place the jar on your altar as a focal point for your spellwork.
  • Work Desk: Keep it on your desk at work to provide ongoing support and focus. Shake it when you want to remind yourself of your intention.
  • Home: Place it in a specific area of your home, such as by the front door for protection or in the bedroom for love and peace.
  • Carry It: If the jar is small enough, carry it with you in your purse or pocket for portable magic.

Disposing of Spell Jars

Spell jars, especially those containing organic materials like herbs and water, can eventually start to degrade. When you’re ready to dispose of a spell jar, you can do it in whichever way feels most aligned with you. You can pull some dirt and put it in a pot and have a pot where you bury your spell jars, or dispose of them in the trash. Remember there are no rules, just do what feels most aligned with you.
